Sonic the Hedgehog was created in Japan.
He was designed by Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima, who both worked for the Japanese video game company Sega. Sonic was created to be Sega's mascot and to compete with Nintendo's Mario.
While Sonic's fictional origin might be a bit more complicated (with some sources mentioning Christmas Island), the real-world origin of this iconic character is definitely Japan.
